VoIP is a great idea that has attracted some evil implementations. Vonage works with a regular phone, and you can call in from regular PSTN phones, but the ToS won't let you curse or criticize Vonage. Skype refuses to interoperate with anyone else and, as far as I can tell, makes you install their proprietary client.

David Beckemeyer has invented PhoneGnome which looks like it offers all the advantages of both, minus the evil. All hail! I'm definitely subscribing to PhoneGnome Blog.
