Responsible for the editorial content of the only paper publication devoted to Linux in embedded systems.

Worked with customers to select and configure Linux server hardware and supported the product review and trade show program. Then, as one of the founding Linux consultants in the new Professional Services group, deployed and problem-solved Linux systems in post-sales efforts.
1998-1999: Principal, Electric Lichen L.L.C.
Co-founded a Linux International member company, Electric Lichen L.L.C., an Internet development, marketing and consulting firm acquired by VA Linux Systems in 1999. Client projects included participation in the successful release of Informix for Linux, DB2 for Linux, and early Linux market research for IBM.
1997: Web Developer, Pacific Digital Interactive
Developed web applications for a full-service web design and production company. Participated in consultative selling. Administered and supported Linux and Solaris, and performed web and Linux training for clients.
1994 - 1997: Webmaster, Agdia
Developed all marketing materials and product documentation for an agricultural biotechnology company. Designed and implemented firm-wide Linux-based Internet mail and Web systems.

Organization Activities

2006-present: Member, Program Committee, LinuxWorld Conference and Expo
Solicit and evaluate conference presentations from Linux developers and IT professionals; help evaluate current and previous conferences and plan future topics and formats.
2006-2007: Organizer, FreedomHEC
Planned and managed the first Linux device driver "unconference" located next to Microsoft's WinHEC. Brought together leading kernel developers, WinHEC attendees, and device driver authors. FreedomHEC was able to cover travel expenses for some speakers as well as provide a completely free of charge conference for all participants.
2004: Member, Program Committee, USENIX Annual Technical Conference
As a member of the program committee for the UseLinux track, solicited and evaluated papers from Linux developers and IT professionals responsible for Linux projects.
2000-2004: Vice-President and President, Silicon Valley Linux Users Group
Vice-President from 2000-2002, then President from 2002-2004, both elected position at the world's largest local Linux user group.
2001-2002: Organizer and spokesperson, "Free Dmitry" movement
Planned and led major public events to call attention to a notorious Digital Millennium Copyright Act case. Charges against Dmitry Sklyarov were dropped.
2002: Member, Program Committee, Codecon
Evaluated and commented on papers on a variety of topics, including the first talk on BitTorrent.
1999-present: Listmaster, linux-elitists mailing list
Manage a mailing list used by key Linux developers, open source community leaders, and the IT media.
1998: Board member, Linux International Conference (LINC)
Participated in planning of the conference that later became the technical side of LinuxWorld Conference and Expo.

URL reputation engine
Author of a URL reputation system based on a novel algorithm, along with a client module for using it and tools for seeding it with sources including comment, referer, and email spam URLs and URLs from social media feeds. Results have been used to report bugs and spammer-used accounts to Google and a US government agency.

Used as an expert source for Linux, Internet and technology policy articles, including articles on the DMCA, software patents, search engine takedown policy, Linux-related lawsuits, and OS migration issues.
