More than ten years ago, Larry McVoy and others at Sun Microsystems talked about whether or not to do a Free Unix.
Then Linux happened. And there was a critical mass of Free, Unix-compatible software that people just moved over to Linux, which resulted in substantial improvements to Linux itself.
Today, Chris DiBona at java.net is talking about whether or not Sun should do open-source Java.
Guess what's happening now?
