To disable the touchpad on a Lenovo T400s:

    synclient TouchpadOff=1

Tested under Fedora 12. The synclient tool is part of the xorg-x11-drv-synaptics package.

Should be a BIOS setting for that as well

Has been on every Thinkpad I've owned. Just sayin'.
