The degree of a node typically refers to the number of links it has to
other peers, i.e. the number of connections it maintains while on the
overlay. The average distance between pairs of nodes is typically the
average path length between any two nodes (measured in hops) -- meaning
if we randomly pick two nodes on a network and try to find the shortest
path between them, on average, that distance is L.
