The whole Altnet fiasco is highly unfortunate (and displays what is
wrong with software patents), and I'm sure that if it came down to it
the patent would be found invalid.  In the short term, the best way to
attack the problem might be to 'fight fire with fire' - does anyone
hold any patent that they could assert against Altnet (If not, file
quickly ;))?  If so, that person could throw an infringement claim in
Altnet's way, and then they could barter widespread use of Altnet's
hash patent via a cross-licensing agreement.  Big companies do this
all the time, of course.
