I don't want to get in a political rant, but if you include emerging
countries like esp. China, clearly the "ultra-majority of real-world
users" are not free from privacy concerns... (not to mention the mess in
Russia and nearby countries)
And even in democratic countries, there could be some legitimate
concerns. After all MacCarthyism happened in the US.

The bottom line is that in many situations, you can have legitimate
reasons to distrust the powers that be without being part of the
"hard-core fringe".
