[p2p-hackers] Is P2P SIP Poised to Out-Hype Skype? (Voxilla)

Glad to see that someone else is thinking about it:

However, I suspect that SIP is too NAT-unfriendly for this job, and IAX
would represent a much better open alternative. There is already a
portable library to handle IAX protocol and audio I/O
(http://iaxclient.sourceforge.net/ ) and work is currently being done to
add a security layer
(http://lists.digium.com/pipermail/asterisk-security/2005-January/000011.h
tml ) so the only two pieces missing to the puzzle would be relatively
easy to add: a P2P distributed registry and a NAT hole-punching mechanism
(or, in difficult cases, full media relaying) through non-NATted middleman
nodes.
