Hi David,

there are as many p2p-streaming (aka end-system-multicast, aka
host-based-multicast, aka application-layer-multicast, aka
overlay-multicast, aka cooperative streaming) papers and projects as
there are stars in the universe.
Most of the solutions/ideas are only suitable for Video-on-Demand (as
opposed to life-streaming or video-conferencing) though.

Many papers/systems focus on a certain part (location of resources,
bandwidth measurement, nat-traversal, locality-awareness, scheduling,
routing [aka construction of the multicast tree/mesh], admission
control, load balancing, <younameit>), which has to be implemented for a
'fully fledged coop-streaming-system'.

Some very promising systems from my point of view are:
esm (for small environments, with under 1000 viewers)

We are currently at the starting point of building an open source
framework, which will be able to plugin any of the stated algorithms
(for whichever part of the system) in the real world for the use of
analyzing and testing (and, maybe, productive overlay streaming,
sometimes in the future). Some load-balancing-, routing-, location-,
scheduling- and admission control mechanisms as well as different
locality models (Vivaldi e.g.) have actually already been implemented
and tested 'in the wild'.
The name of the project is IlmStream the current incarnation of the
framework is called 'ekStream' and some information can be found at:

(very rudimental at the moment, sorry - but implementing and testing is,
as always, more interesting and thrilling than documentation... :-/)

Interesting topics (from my point of view) of this area of research at
the moment are probably
* resilience to faults/attacks
* scalability to high numbers of 'users' in combination with stability
* accountability (if at all possible) and maybe
* secure group communciation
* analytical proof (Loads of simulations have been done, some
real-world-measurements as well, but analytical proof is hardly ever found).
