Something that I find endlessly interesting is the diversity of P2P clients participating on the Gnutella network.  This page shows an interesting report of this coexistence:

These statistics come out of an ultrapeer-centric crawl and as such are not complete at the leaf level.  For some description of this data, you can refer here:

Even with an evolving Gnutella protocol, an open protocol allows coexistence.  I could go into the issues raised by protocol version incompatibilities but that is another story.
