I use clive <URL:http://home.gna.org/clive/> to download at the 
command-line to a meaningfully-named file, and watch it with 
totem-gstreamer.

    $ cat /etc/debian_version
    lenny/sid
    $ sudo aptitude install clive totem-gstreamer
    [...]

    $ clive http://youtube.com/watch?v=Ne-YbMYAvuA
    clive/0.4.3 (linux2; python/2.4.5; urlgrabber/3.1.0)
