there's also rxvt-unicode(an rxvt clone) which handles utf-8 very well
it also has a very nice feature, the daemon mode(one daemon can open
multiple windows on multiple displays)

on my system, cat /usr/share/dict/words(234937 lines) yields:
uxterm:	      real 39.820s user 0.001s sys 0.087s
rxvt-unicode: real 18.671s user 0.001s sys 0.196s
