Oh, I always wondered what that was for.

Whichever of these you're using, you may find the new(ish) ssh -D
option useful -- combined with socks-aware applications or the tsocks
wrapper it lets you forward dynamically-assigned ports out through a
firewall, or off an untrusted network.
