"Old thinking" like 1+1=2?  Does that make it worse?

"Available" does not mean you have to use it.

It comes at a cost of time and effort.  Possibly that cost is
worthwhile if you really need to tweak compile-time options.  Perhaps
the time would be better spent making the options run-time options, or
removing bugs, or adding new features...
