I thought it was "Ed McMahon's Star Trek"!? Didn't he defeat the Romans by 
having people sing at the right pitch to destroy their proton torpedoes?

I wouldn't know, I don't watch television (of course! Can I have the secret 
decoder ring now?)

As for the real answer, I think it's obvious. Even without Ed, "McMahon's Star 
Search" is completely different from "American Idol". It's still a lot 
longer, for one thing, and it doesn't have the letter "i".
