A great example of this is TiVo. They originally used a PPC 405 chip, or at 
least had a substantial amount of them. Their new boxes are MIPS, all they 
have to do is change a compiler flag and wholah!

This is not totally true all the time, depends on the distro. Some of the 
embedded linux companies are always looking for a loop hole to charge, and 
Sharp was paying a royalty to Lineo for each unit as well as for the JVM and 
some other stuff. Embedded Linux is not always free, although it can be.
