Gaim IMO is the best IM client because is supports Yahoo, MSN, AIM, IRC,
napster, and jabber all with one GUI -- also has tabs, spell checker,
auto relogin, and the ability to extend it arbitrarily with perl
scripts.  I have used it with jabber in house to do development and AIM
to communicate with SO.

Plus, there is a pretty good Windoze port if you have to use that
platform as the client.
