IBM briefly offered a not-very-desirable ThinkPad with Caldera
preinstalled. Not surprisingly, most Linux people picked the
hardware they wanted and just blew away the preinstalled OS.

IBM laid off their ThinkPad Linux guru, Keith Frechette, in June.

I still recommend writing to Lou Gerstner (USPS "return receipt
requested" or FedEx) to request your refund. Make it clear that
you do NOT accept the license and will not be bound by it.

For a future project, it might be interesting to be in physical
possession of proprietary software but arguably not subject to
the license.

Send letters to

Mr. Louis V. Gerstner, Jr.
Chairman of the Board
International Business Machines Corporation
New Orchard Road
Armonk, NY 10504
(919) 499-1900 (only for FedEx -- write, don't call. Don't include
your own phone number; make his "no refund" person write back instead
of calling.)
