begin  Marc MERLIN  quotation:

	By the by, your choice of selections from dict is rather
convenient for you:

>From WordNet (r) 1.7 [wn]:

  alternative
[...]
       3: pertaining to unconventional choices; "an alternative life
          style"

Thus, people refer to Unix as an "alternative to Windows" as a means
of knocking it off its pedestal. Sure, Unix came first, and Windows
95 was actually produced as an alternative to the Xenix machines that
Microsoft used for their development for the better part of a decade;
but people refer to Unix as the "alternative".

The common reaction is that somehow people pushing this "alternative"
are pushing uphill. That it must be some fringe thing that you'll
never need to worry about.

As for your transit history, again, that was never in my original
message.
